Discussion:
[Lmuse-developer] Right area of Arranger Window not visible anymore

Hi,

Today I have compiled and installed the latest MusE version from the github
repository under Ubuntu Studio 16.04.2. I loaded a med file into MusE. I
created this med file last year using a development version of MusE from that
time.

The first time I loaded that med file into MusE today, I was told that the med
file format is from version 2.1 or so, and that it will be converted to the new
format when I save the loaded file. I saved the loaded med file.

Then I noticed that I cannot see that right are in the Arranger Window, where
you see the cursor indicator for the play position, and the parts which I
created and put notes in them. I only see the left part of the Arranger Window
with the specifications for every track. For better understanding, please see
the attached screenshot.

It is impossible for me to make the right area of the Arranger Window visible,
not by dragging the mouse cursor nor by resizing the window with the Arranger
Window in it. So I cannot see the parts and notes of every track that I set
about one year ago.

This might be caused by the screen resolution of my computer. It is probably
set to 1024 x 768 pixels, at least it looks to me this way. Under Debian 8.7,
which was previously installed on the same machine with the same screen, I was
able to change the screen resolution to a higher screen resolution by doing
the following:

I added the following line to /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_GFXMODE=1400x1050x32

And then I executed the "update-grub" command.

This worked under Debian 8.7 (the screen resolution was in fact set to
1400x1050 pixels), but I replaced Debian 8.7 with Ubuntu Studio 16.04.2 on the
same machine, and the above mentioned GRUB_GFXMODE parameters are not applied
by Ubuntu/grub when started: Ubuntu Studio always displays the screen with
possibly 1024x768 pixels.

I am not asking for a resolution regarding the screen resolution problem on my
machine which now runs Ubuntu Studio 16.04.2, but I would like to make you
aware of that I cannot see the right area of the Arranger Window when I load
that med file which I created last year into the latest development version of
MusE.

Jens

I'll assume the very latest git master.
Each of the three sections of the arranger window is separated by a
splitter bar,
two splitters in total - for the mixer strip followed by the track
list followed by
the arranger canvas.
You should be able to grab the offending splitter and resize.
(If the entire window is simply too big for your screen, remember that
in linux Alt + Left Mouse + Mouse Move usually moves ANY window,
allowing access to the edges.)

Recently we had reports of Ubuntu IIRC not doing our menus correctly.
Apparently there's a package to install which restores the menus.

But more likely (and unfortunately), since Qt5 we are dealing with a
problem:

The Arranger is frozen sometimes, when using KDE Breeze or Oxygen style.
You will not be able to operate the splitters.

Solutions:
1)
In the MusE Settings > Appearance Settings, Style/Fonts tab,
use a theme OTHER than Breeze or Oxygen, such as Fusion.
And in the MusE Color Scheme section, do not use
Dark Theme.cfg or Ardour.cfg (use Light Theme.cfg).

or

2)
If you really want to use Breeze or Oxygen, or Dark Theme.cfg or Ardour.cfg,
latest MusE git master has a workaround you can try:
Go to MusE Settings > Global Settings > GUI Behaviour and click
'Bug fix: Fix frozen MDI windows'. Restart MusE.

Working on the issue with KDE Breeze team.
Some fixes have been applied upstream. I'm testing them.

Good luck, lemme know how it goes.

Hi Tim,

Thank you again.

I managed to resolve the problem: Moving the mouse over the right edge of the
Arranger Window (where no Arranger Canvas was displayed) turned the mouse
pointer into a two-sided arrow (an arrow to the left and to the right). I then
moved the two-sided arrow to the left: Now I can see the Arranger Canvas
again.

Thanks, Tim.

Yes, I believe I have seen this also when opening some old songs. I don't
think it is all songs, might be when the song was last saved with some
specific older version of MusE that causes this behaviour. Haven't looked
closer at it, and as you found it can be worked around by finding the
handle on the right.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for your feedback. So this behaviour occurs independent from the
screen resolution, because I guess that you do not have a screen resolution of
only 1024 x 768 pixels.

How about fixing this behaviour? I.e like this way:

"If a med file in an obsolete file format version is opened for the first time in
a current MusE version, then make sure that the upper left corner of the
Arranger Canvas is displayed at the middle of the vertical screen resolution".
Example: The vertical screen resolution is 1024 pixels; the upper left corner
of the Arranger Canvas is then displayed at the vertical screen position of
512 pixels, seen from the left edge of the screen.

Jens
